History & Background

The building's history goes back to 1859, when the Kursaal Interlaken was built on the site of the former Augustinian monastery “inter lacus”. For decades it was the social centre of the rising tourist resort, although high-stakes gambling remained banned in the canton of Bern for a long time. Under the new Swiss Gambling Act, the Federal Council granted a Type B licence for Interlaken in 2001, and on 3 July 2002 the Casino Interlaken reopened in the tradition-rich Kursaal. Since then the venue has benefited from its unique location in the Jungfrau region's tourist hotspot between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. In 2020, Casino Interlaken AG became one of the first Swiss casinos to move into legal online gambling, launching StarVegas, its own ESBK-certified online casino, which is visible nationally as a gold sponsor of SC Bern among others.
